Airport Delay Map

All data is pulled directly from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), a federal statistical agency that collects mandatory reporting data from United States airlines. Typically, data available from the BTS lags about three months from the current date.

This visualization is created using the Reporting Carrier On-Time Performance dataset. An algorithm summarizes the raw flight data, and determines if it is delayed or not. For this visualization, a flight is considered delayed if it departs (i.e. pushes back from the gate) more than 15 minutes past the scheduled departure time for any reason, such as weather, staffing issues, or maintenance issues. Other pages might use arrival times, but, departure data is used here as we wanted to see geographical influences on delays (such as weather).
